Can you tell us something about DIMECC?
‘I work for DIMECC, which works to enable co-creation in R&D. Our goal is to bring innovations to the market faster. At DIMECC my assignment is to lead the One Sea – Autonomous Maritime Ecosystem, which is a consortium of 9 companies (ABB, Cargotec, Ericsson, Finferries, Finnpilot Pilotage, Meyer Turku, Rolls-Royce, Tieto and Wärtsilä). The goal of One Sea is to make autonomous maritime traffic a reality by 2025.’
What are your biggest technological challenges at the moment?
‘For the maritime industry there are two major trends at the moment: energy efficiency and environmental issues and digitalization. The major disruptive technology regarding digitalization, is autonomy, and the advances made in autonomy will penetrate the entire maritime logistics chain. That will be both a challenge and an opportunity to a business that transports most of the goods in our world by still adhering to principles from several centuries back.’
What do you hope people will learn from your presentation at TUS Expo?
‘What is happening globally in in the field of autonomous maritime traffic, who the main players are and what the business case for maritime autonomous traffic is.’
Which presentation do you hope to give in 5 years?
‘In five years we will have a lot more concrete examples throughout the maritime logistics chain.’
